This is an easy sell to consumers but producers gain far more benefit.
With all the intrusive advertising these days, it is hard to remember what an important role it plays in people's lives. We are not referring to junk mail but to the information that people care about and have a real interest in. Regardless the medium, when it comes to something we are interested in we take notice and often find ourselves jotting down that URL to get more.
That said, we are still barraged with a ton of advertising. In fact, there is so much we've come to accept advertising as some type of background noise, like elevator music. It is there. You remember hearing it but for the life of you, you just cannot remember what the tune was. Essentially, there are so many untargeted ads in our lives we mostly just ignore them. So it is obvious that advertiser's need an edge in making their products stand out.
Given a choice, advertisers and their recipients would both prefer targeted advertisements and certainly the cost of all the time, money and effort wasted on those unaffected is an overhead we could all do without. By using TAGs on advertising media, or using TAGs on products themselves, you are assured that the recipients of your message are those people with an interest in what you have to offer.
Today TAGs are not instantly recognizable but that is about to change. As people come to understand that a TAG is a route to something more, adoption will begin to accelerate. Once it becomes clear to everyone that a TAG on an advertisement means something more, or better yet when people understand that a TAG on a pair shoes could lead to a discount, then consumers will demand to see them on everything.
In the last 15 years, the adoption of the internet has made commonplace, the ability to look for and find things previously impossible. We have come a long way from the original "Yellow Pages" and other paper directories, now able to search the world from our laptops and desktops. However, the process lacks synchronicity.
In fact the process is completely asynchronous. We encounter something out in the world or hear about something from a friend and then wait until we are home to check it out (okay, sometimes we look up things at work too). The point is, we rarely have the ability or opportunity to follow up on something as it occurs. TAG can change that and the change it brings is a good thing. It means that people can get information on their terms when they want it.
When you walk past a store window and you see something you want to know more about, if it's TAGged, you can capture the TAG and have something returned immediately or you can store it away or send it to friends. Whatever you choose, it's on your terms, your schedule and synchronously or asynchronously is up to you.
That is opt-in advertising and it's one of the most important new features that TAG brings that will change our lives. And just like the line in the movie, "buckle your seat-belt Dorothy, 'cause Kansas is goin' bye-bye".
